MLP last part of this journal 'cause of size, short version: Not a Brony, not a hater, explanation below.
So I've been trying to revive this account, hasn't worked so well. I typed this out in frickin office document because college means no real time at any length to play catch-up. I'm pretty sure I've missed important stuff, I'm really sorry about that.
Work: Wal-Mart continues to be the bane of my existence. I should get an edge once I finish specs for converting laptops into tablets (of the REAL touchscreen kind). Finally something that people can't just say 'that's ok, I'll just go to Wal-Mart' to.
Writing: I badly need to work on those, have not just next chapter partially written but several more one-shots. Grr I HATE time crunches.
TV: I have only a few things I've seen, Thundercats Reboot and a couple of Young Justice episodes. Both are breaths of fresh air in a time where crap no story shows seem to be becoming the norm. It's fairly hard to keep up with the time crunch, but to those with more time they're definitely worth at least taking a look at. Thundercats is by far my favorite, I watched the original as a kid and the reboot does an excellent example of building on that instead of tearing it down.
Warhammer 40k: Well, after all this time I finally started to take a look into it. HOLY CRAP that's a ton of information dense backstory to go through. Paid a couple bucks for a bag-o-bits that somebody was wanting to get rid of and have been (very slowly) gluing together a patchwork Grey Knights army. Now I just need to figure out what the heck a Grey Knight is.
Uh...ok fine, guess I have to get to the last part.
It took two semesters of a combination of online prodding from several of you here, and the guy who lives in the suite upstairs, to finally get me to set down and watch an ep (technically 2) of My Little Pony.
What contact have I had with the show prior to this?
-

and the animation she helped work on for BronyTunes.
-

and his portal parodies.
-A handful of fansongs, namely this:
[link] which I found while trying to find stuff from Rebel Moon: Rising (a really old videogame)
-aaand...ok that's about it.
All of this stuff is really well done, quite impressive really. The big reason why I resisted checking out the series proper isn't because I've deadset into hating it. While I figured it was out of my range of interests, I didn't want to take the chance of addiction and lose what little time I have as is.
Even so, one can only hear about it every day until finally giving in. So, after watching the 2 episode season finale, here's the verdict:
I'm still not a Brony, but I'm not a hater. The show is remarkably well done, but it just doesn't fall into my tastes.
3 songs, 2 reprises, all done in classic Disney fashion. Now we know where all the good writers in Hollywood moved to. I was genuinely impressed with the nostalgic feel. Good writing, good orchestration, and singers with a vocal range perfectly fit for the lyrics, FINALLY talent is reached. What doesn't compute is the fact that IT'S A FRICKIN TV SHOW, and they inserted that talent in there, major props just for that.
The rest of this follows the above-mentioned TV show reasoning, so I don't have to say that every time.
Well thought out story and plot. Again, not what I expected. True there could have been set-ups that I missed, having not watched any of the episodes beyond these two, but still I didn't expect what I saw. For one thing, who nearly starves a prisoner to death is a KIDS SHOW!?!?!? Plus a villain who is actually evil? Not just 'give her a hug and it'll all be better'? The changeling queen again had that touch of 'classic evil villain' that I had long ago forgotten about. I did have to laugh at the concept of her minions 'deep striking' into the city. The solution to the problem was still a tad cheesy but an acceptable loss considering the quality of everything else.
In all I respect the show on it's merits. Bringing surprising quality to what at first appears to be just another kids show. It's still not in my tastes and I'm not going to go making a pony-sona (I'm sure by this point in reading someone is almost finished making one for me anyways), but I can respect the quality of production and the reasoning behind those that DO choose to be dedicated fans.
Ok, update done, time for class, then back to sifting through messages....
[edit]
Well, the good news is I can use the word "Twilight" without wanting to shoot myself anymore.
I almost forgot one of the coolest parts: I noticed an odd musical pattern in one of the songs while watching, known as a 'Deceptive Cadence', one quick trip to google and HOLY CRAP THAT WAS ON PURPOSE!?!?!?!?
Yay music nut.
